Module 6 - Exercise Therapy

Information

Objectives

The general objective of this module is:

  • To introduce the concept of exercise therapy and its guiding principles in treating obesity and EDs in young people, while focusing on its patient-centred nature and the necessity for an individualised approach given the varied needs of these patients.

The specific objectives include:

  • Offering age-specific strategies and practical solutions in approaching and treating young patients with obesity and EDs.
  • Providing guiding principles specific to obesity and ED treatment - FITT (frequency, intensities, timing, and type of exercise)
  • Reinforcing acquired knowledge through case-based experiential learning
  • Illustrating the impact of obesity on the quality of life in young people through a personal patient story/ testimony
  • Presenting an expert opinion in dealing with obesity, i.e. diagnosis; treatment: diet and exercise; parents’ role, etc.
  • Assessing the overall attainment through discussions, peer interviews, and critical article reviews



Estimated time

  • Two lecture/seminar hours+ nine individual study hours (preparation of assignments, self- evaluation, peer interviews, online/forum discussions, questionnaires).

Acquired competences

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • Understand the guiding principles (FITT) of treatment of obesity and EDs;
  • Understand the impact of obesity on the quality of life on young people;
  • Apply the acquired knowledge when dealing with young patients with EDs or obesity;
  • Critically evaluate different aspects of obesity and EDs.
